Island Magazine has surveyed expats, researched the costs, and made scouting trips to the world's most enticing islands.    The results are in:  The Big Island of Hawaii is the NUMBER 1 island to live on in the world!

See the full list of the top 20 islands in the world at the above link.

Well, this comes as no surprise to me.  I first visited the Big Island in 1990 on our honeymoon.   It was love at first sight for us.    why you ask?

Here are the top 10 reasons:

1) More open space - even though it is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, the population is less than 200,000.

2) less congestion - no big freeways here; we are small town USA

3) 11 of the world's 13 climate zones (we don't have glaciers or sand dunes). The diversity in climates is fascinating.  You go a short distance and it's totally different.

4) It's the least expensive of all the Hawaiian Islands.  Median price of a home on Hawaii Island is just $378,000.

5) With over 4035 square miles, there is always something new to explore.

6) The natural beauty is everywhere; beautiful beaches, picturesque cliffs, amazingly clear water for snorkeling, swaying palm trees, towering mountain peaks and an active volcano (actively errupting since 1983).

7) Renowned sport fishing off the Kona Coast

8) Lots of protected marine sanctuary for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts

9) Surfers enjoy the waves here as well

10) Lots of history surrounding the Hawaiian Kingdom on this island where King Kamehameha was born

I'm sure once you have spent some time of this enticing island, you will have your own special reasons to add to this list.
